1967 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008
Error
Description
Struck in the 40% silver composition used for Kennedy Half Dollars from 1965 through 1970, DDO-008 on the 1967 Philadelphia Mint half dollar documents two die marriages through its production history. The first pairing, UVC-322 and DMR-019, covers Stages A and B, showing medium triple spread on RTY of LIBERTY where three overlapping hub impressions create two displaced secondary images flanking the primary letters. A reverse die change then produced UVC-474 and DMR-031 for Stage C, which introduces doubled stars clockwise from the K-6 to K-12 positions on the obverse, expanding the diagnostic footprint. The die pair change within a single DDO designation traces the obverse die's continued use after its original reverse partner was replaced. The comments notation "BS" accompanies this variety in the catalog. The 1967 Kennedy Half is part of the transitional silver-clad era between the 90% silver 1964 issue and the copper-nickel clad composition adopted in 1971, making these 40% silver varieties compositionally distinctive within the series.
