1964 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-036

Description

Showing a close clockwise spread from a pivot at 10:00 on the date, the 1964 Proof WDDO-036 is a Class V pivoted hub doubling variety with well-documented die markers on both surfaces. With the pivot at 10:00, the date — located in the lower right portion of the obverse die — is relatively far from the pivot point, which explains why the doubling is most visible there: pivoted doubling increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot, as the rotational arc produces a wider separation between primary and secondary images at greater radii. The obverse carries a die gouge on the bottom right side of the base of Lincoln's bust. On the reverse, a die scratch runs across the rim above the ERIC in AMERICA, and a small die gouge dot can be found to the right of the right cornice of the Lincoln Memorial. These markers provide collectors with multiple confirmation points for attribution beyond the doubled die pattern itself. The close spread designation indicates that the angular rotation between hub impressions was small, producing narrow separation that requires magnification to detect reliably. Struck from the 1964 proof mintage of 3,950,762 cents using dies with a service life of approximately 3,000 impressions. Collectors should examine the date digits carefully at 10x or higher magnification, looking for the CW-shifted secondary image that characterizes this pivoted variety. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
