Description

Standing among the most significant entries in the 1964 Lincoln cent doubled die catalog, WDDO-046 is a dual variety — its obverse die carries a doubled die obverse while its reverse die is simultaneously a doubled die reverse, independently listed as 1964 1¢ Pr WDDR-124 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. Finding both a DDO and a DDR on the same coin is exceptionally rare, requiring two separate dies in the same press to each have received misaligned hub impressions during their independent manufacturing processes. On the obverse, doubling shows under the horizontal crossbar of the L in LIBERTY. The reverse is where this variety truly distinguishes itself: the WDDR-124 designation marks a strong clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 10:00, visible on the letters of OF AMERICA, the IBUS of PLURIBUS, the designer's initials (FG), the lower right portion of the Memorial building, and the letters of ONE CENT. Two short vertical die scratches above the right side of the C in AMERICA serve as a reverse die marker. The strength of the reverse doubling — affecting multiple legend elements, the architectural detail, and the designer's initials across a broad arc of the die face — makes this one of the more dramatic DDR varieties in the 1964 proof cent series. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ Pr WDDO-046 and attributed by the Wexler Team. Struck from the 1964 proof mintage of 3,950,762 pieces on dies with a service life of roughly 3,000 strikes, placing a hard ceiling on the population of this dual variety. Collectors who possess this coin hold two independently attributed doubled dies on a single cent — a convergence that makes it a premium target for advanced variety specialists. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
