Description

Exhibiting a close clockwise spread visible on the top left side of the I of IN, above the right end of the horizontal crossbar of the 4 in the date, and under the horizontal crossbar of the L in LIBERTY, the 1964 WDDO-043 is a proof doubled die obverse variety with an unusually specific distribution of its doubling across multiple design elements. The fact that doubling appears in three distinct locations — the motto, the date, and LIBERTY — provides collectors with multiple diagnostic checkpoints for confirming the variety. On the reverse, a short die gouge extends from the rim above the C in AMERICA, serving as an additional attribution marker. No significant obverse die markers have been noted beyond the doubled die itself. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ Pr WDDO-043 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this proof variety was struck from the 1964 mintage of 3,950,762 proof cents. With proof dies limited to approximately 3,000 strikes, the maximum surviving population of any individual proof doubled die is inherently constrained. The close spread designation indicates that the separation between primary and secondary hub images is narrow, requiring careful examination under magnification of at least 10x to detect. Proof surfaces can make close spreads either easier or harder to see depending on lighting angle, so tilting the coin under a directional light source is essential. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
