1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-038
Error
Description
Pivoted hub doubling in the counterclockwise direction defines the 1964 WDDO-038, a Class V doubled die obverse variety from the Philadelphia Mint's massive business strike production of 2,648,575,000 Lincoln cents. The CCW spread is visible on the digits "64" of the date, where the secondary hub impression left a shadow image rotated slightly from the primary strike. Class V pivoted doubling occurs when the hub rotates around a fixed pivot point between successive impressions into the die, creating doubling that radiates outward from that pivot — design elements farther from the pivot show more pronounced separation between the primary and secondary images. On the obverse, parallel die scratches running from northwest to southeast through the RT of LIBERTY serve as a key attribution marker, along with a die scratch running from south-southwest to north-northeast to the right of the throat and chin. The reverse carries a light die scratch running west-northwest from the top left of the T in CENT. These die markers provide collectors with multiple confirmation points beyond the doubling itself, significantly reducing the risk of misattribution against the many other 1964 WDDO varieties. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ WDDO-038 and attributed by the Wexler Team. Struck on a 95% copper, 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
