1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-024

Description

In the final year of the Franklin half dollar series before the Kennedy design replaced it in 1964, DDO-024 records medium spread on BERTY of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE, and TRUS of TRUST — a hub displacement that affected the left side of the obverse legend arc more strongly than the right, leaving the leading letters of each inscription showing the clearest secondary images. As a proof issue, this half dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on polished planchets with polished dies, producing the mirror-like fields and frosted design elements that characterize proof coinage. The partial-word spread pattern — BERTY rather than full LIBERTY, TRUS rather than full TRUST — suggests the hub displacement axis crossed the die face at an angle that maximized separation on certain letter groups while leaving others within tolerance.
