Description

Standing alongside WWHO-001 as one of only two documented Doubled Working Hub Obverse varieties for the 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent, WWHO-002 represents a second instance where the working hub itself received a misaligned impression during manufacture — an event that fundamentally multiplied its effect by transmitting the doubling to every working die subsequently created from that hub. Unlike individual WDDO varieties, which are each the product of a single die's hubbing anomaly, a WWHO variety is the parent of a family: it spawns multiple working dies that all carry the same hub-level doubling while developing their own unique die markers during their respective production lives. The defining characteristic of WWHO-002 is a spread directed toward the rim on the date and on IN GOD WE TRUST, a broader distribution than WWHO-001's date-only involvement, indicating that the hub displacement was of greater magnitude or different geometry — sufficient to project visible doubling across both the lower-right date zone and the upper motto. Because die markers will vary on different working dies produced from this hub, collectors may encounter specimens with identical hub-inherited doubling on the date and motto but completely different scratch patterns, gouges, and progressive features. The variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1c Pr WWHO-002, with no additional cross-references currently known, and was attributed by the Wexler Team. The proof designation confirms that at least one working die from this hub served in the 1962 proof production at the Philadelphia Mint, where 3,218,019 proof sets were struck in the final year of the original 95% copper alloy. The existence of two documented doubled working hubs for proof production — along with two additional hubs identified for business strikes — was the pivotal discovery that prompted the comprehensive renumbering of the entire 1962 WDDO catalog.
