Description

Focused on two of the most prominent reverse inscriptions, the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-009 carries a spread towards the center on UNITED and ONE CENT. The centripetal Class II displacement on these two elements — the upper legend and the central denomination — provides collectors with two spatially separated examination zones, one near the top of the reverse and one at the center, allowing the doubling to be cross-verified across distinct areas of the die face. The inward-directed spread indicates that the secondary hub impression shifted toward the coin's center during die manufacture, and its restriction to UNITED and ONE CENT while leaving other inscriptions unaffected suggests that the distortion was concentrated along the vertical axis of the reverse. No significant obverse die markers have been recorded. The reverse offers a single but reliable diagnostic: a small die gouge appearing as a dot below the E in AMERICA. This gouge dot, situated in the AMERICA inscription area — which is itself not part of the doubling zone — provides an attribution point that can be evaluated independently of the spread assessment on UNITED and ONE CENT. The Proof surfaces characteristic of the 1961 Philadelphia cent preserve both the centripetal displacement and the diagnostic gouge with the clarity needed for confident attribution, and collectors are advised to use moderate magnification with oblique lighting to enhance the visibility of the inward-directed secondary impressions on the affected letters.
