Description

Exhibiting a close counterclockwise spread originating from a pivot point at approximately 9:00, the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-005 is a Class V rotated hub doubling variety whose displacement registers on the designer's initials FG and the letters of AMERICA. The pivot at about 9:00, corresponding to the left-center position on the die face, means that design elements situated farther from this fulcrum experience progressively greater displacement along the rotational arc. Both FG and AMERICA lie at moderate to substantial distances from the 9:00 position, which accounts for the visible doubling on these particular elements while other, closer design areas remain unaffected. The CCW rotational direction creates a distinctive displacement signature that differs from the centripetal spreads dominant among many other 1961 DDR varieties, and understanding this rotational geometry helps collectors predict which portions of the affected letters will show the strongest secondary impressions. Neither the obverse nor the reverse presents significant die markers, so the pivot-based CCW spread pattern must serve as the primary attribution tool. Proof surfaces enhance the detectability of this close rotational doubling, as the sharp letter edges and reflective fields characteristic of Proof coinage allow the displaced secondary impressions on the FG initials and AMERICA inscription to stand out under proper magnification and lighting conditions that might render them invisible on a business-strike counterpart.
