Description

Bearing the eleventh position in the documented DDO sequence for the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-011 displays a close spread directed towards the rim on the date and the word TRUST. The outward displacement of these two design elements toward the coin's periphery identifies this as a Class I rotated hub doubling variety, where the secondary hub impression shifted slightly outward relative to the primary impression during die manufacture. The involvement of both the date numerals and the final word of the IN GOD WE TRUST motto provides two distinct zones for the collector to examine: the lower-left obverse where the date resides, and the upper-right area where TRUST appears, allowing doubling detection to be cross-checked across spatially separated regions of the die face. No significant obverse die markers have been recorded beyond the doubling itself, making the spread on the date and TRUST the primary identification criterion for the obverse. The reverse, however, carries a useful diagnostic in the form of a small die gouge positioned below the left side of the D in UNITED. This reverse marker, situated in the upper legend area, provides an independent confirmation point once the obverse doubling has been tentatively identified. The 1961 Proof cent's controlled striking process preserved the close rim-directed spread with the clarity that characterizes well-maintained Proof dies, and specimens in higher grades will reveal the secondary impressions on the date digits and the TRUST letters with particular distinctness under 7x to 10x magnification.
