1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020
Error
Description
Found exclusively on proof coinage, WDDO-020 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof Large Date displays a very close Class II spread towards the center on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. The centerward spread — a hallmark of Class II rotational hub doubling — places the secondary impression slightly inward from the primary on the affected letters, creating a subtle but genuine doubled appearance that requires careful examination under magnification. The obverse carries two die scratches as diagnostics: one running from west-southwest to east-northeast through the top of the ear, and another running west-southwest from the eye. On the reverse, a die scratch runs south-southwest from the bottom of the 11th Memorial column, and numerous light die scratches populate the last two Memorial bays. The Large Date proof designation confirms this die was prepared during the initial proof production phase at Philadelphia before the Small Date hub was introduced. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDO-020 with no other known cross-references, the proof format limits the surviving population to approximately 3,000 specimens based on typical proof die longevity.
