Description

Paired with the Small Date version under the same Wexler catalog number, WDDR-015 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike presents an extremely close counterclockwise spread on the designer's initials, USA, and ONE CENT. The CCW rotational spread is among the most subtle forms of hub doubling cataloged on the 1960 cent, demanding high magnification and careful edge-by-edge comparison to detect the displaced secondary impression. The counterclockwise direction means the secondary image is offset in a clockwise direction from the primary, and collectors should focus on the trailing edges of the affected letters where the step or shadow is most apparent. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears as a dot to the left of the I in IN, accompanied by numerous die scratches running mostly north to south to the left and right of Lincoln's bust. The reverse carries a small die gouge appearing as a dot between the upper E and D in UNITED, providing a convenient attribution marker in the upper legend. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-015 with no other known cross-references, the Large Date hub type is verified by the taller 1 digit and lower-sitting 0 in the date. Both hub variants of WDDR-015 present identical challenges to the attributor, and experienced collectors often rely on the die markers rather than the doubling itself to identify this extremely close variety.
