1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
ErrorDescription
Characterized by a close spread on the designer's initials and the lower part of the letters in ONE CENT, WDDR-009 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike is distinguished from neighboring entries in the DDR catalog primarily by its reverse die markers. While the doubling itself resembles that of WDDR-008 in scope and intensity, the reverse die carries three small die gouges that serve as definitive attribution points: one above the P in EPU, another to the right of the bottom of the second A in AMERICA, and a third to the right of the designer's initials. These reverse gouges make WDDR-009 one of the more straightforward varieties to confirm once a collector has located a specimen with the appropriate doubling, since the gouges are positioned in areas that are easily examined under moderate magnification. On the obverse, die scratches run in multiple directions through the 19 in the date, and other die scratches appear throughout the obverse field. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-009 with no other known cross-references, this variety occupies the Large Date production phase at Philadelphia and should be distinguished from its Small Date sibling by examining the relative height and spacing of the date numerals.
