1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Presenting its doubling on the designer's initials and as notches on the bottoms of the letters in ONE CENT, WDDR-004 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike offers collectors a variety where the hub doubling can be most readily confirmed at the base of the denomination text. The notch-like appearance results from a displaced secondary hub impression creating small step-like extensions at the letter feet, a diagnostic that is relatively straightforward to identify under moderate magnification. Two die stages have been documented on both sides of the coin. Obverse Stage A carries die scratches running from south-southwest to north-northeast to the right of the lips and chin, along with numerous other die scratches throughout the obverse. By Stage B, these markers are much weaker but remain visible. Reverse Stage A shows a nearly horizontal die scratch below the ATES in STATES, with other die scratches scattered throughout the reverse. Reverse Stage B introduces a small die gouge northeast of the designer's initials. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-004 with no other known cross-references, the progression from Stage A to Stage B illustrates how secondary die diagnostics evolve while the primary hub doubling on the initials and denomination text persists unchanged throughout the die's service life.
