Description
Combining two classes of hub doubling on a single proof die, WDDR-008 is one of the most mechanically interesting doubled die reverses from the 1959 Lincoln Memorial cent. CONECA catalogs it as 1-R-II+V, indicating a Class II spread towards the center on the letters of UNITED and ONE CENT, combined with a Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot point near the rim at approximately 10:00, affecting the letters of CENT, the designer's initials, and the letters of AMERICA. The Wexler designation is 1959 1c Pr WDDR-008. As a proof variety, this die was used to strike coins on specially polished planchets, making the doubling crisper and more discernible than on business strikes. Reverse die markers include numerous die scratches in the last Memorial bay, a die gouge appearing as a dot near the rim above the N in UNITED, and a die gouge to the right of the upper 2nd S of STATES. No significant obverse die markers have been noted.
