Description

Struck during the final year of the Lincoln Wheat Cent reverse, this 1958 Denver Mint cud error belongs to a date that marks the end of an era in American numismatic design. The following year, Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse would replace the familiar wheat stalks that had adorned the denomination since Victor David Brenner's original 1909 composition. Cataloged as CU-1C-1958D-05R, this variety exhibits a retained interior die break — a cud — on the reverse, where a fragment of the die face fractured and separated while remaining partially attached, producing a raised featureless lump on the struck coin. Denver's 1958 production exceeded 800 million cents, an enormous output that subjected working dies to tremendous striking pressure and accelerated fatigue. The sheer volume of coins produced from each die pair increased the likelihood that weakened areas of the die steel would fracture before the die was retired, generating cud errors like CU-1C-1958D-05R. For collectors pursuing the Wheat Cent series, cuds from the final year carry both variety interest and the appeal of a transitional date — the last coins to bear a reverse design that had served for half a century.
