Every coin series has a final year, and for the Lincoln Wheat Cent that year was 1958. CU-1C-1958D-03, the third cataloged cud for the 1958 Denver issue, belongs to the last production run of a reverse design that had served American commerce since 1909. The following year, Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse would replace the wheat stalks, closing one of the longest-running design pairings in United States coinage history. Dies used for 1958-D cents were among the last ever manufactured with the Wheat reverse, and their rim failures represent the final mechanical echoes of a half-century of production.
