Description

Interior die breaks represent a distinct category within die failure taxonomy, differing from cuds and retained cuds in that the fractured die fragment is located within the interior of the die face rather than at the rim edge. IDB-1c-1956-03 on the 1956 Lincoln Wheat Cent from the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark) records the third cataloged interior die break from this date. When an interior section of the die fractures and separates—or depresses below the surrounding die surface—it produces a raised, irregular area on the struck coin that can range from a small bump to a large amorphous blister depending on the size and depth of the fractured fragment. Unlike rim-connected cuds, interior die breaks can occur anywhere on the die face, making their location unpredictable and their discovery often serendipitous.
