Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this interior die break variety was identified on the 1955-S Lincoln wheat cent struck at the San Francisco Mint. An interior die break occurs when a portion of the die surface fractures and separates without the break extending to the rim edge, distinguishing it from a cud where the fracture reaches the rim. The broken piece may remain partially attached (a retained interior die break) or fall away entirely, each producing different visual characteristics on struck coins. On this specimen, both a standard interior die break and a retained interior die break are present, with the retained portion indicated by its distinct raised profile where the broken die fragment shifted slightly before being held in place during striking.
