Description

Third documented reverse cud for the 1955 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, CU-1C-1955-03R records a rim die break on a date best known for its famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse — one of the most celebrated error coins in American numismatics. While CU-1C-1955-03R is an entirely separate die variety from the famous DDO, it shares the same year and mint, placing it in the orbit of intense collector interest that surrounds all 1955-P Wheat Cent varieties. Philadelphia produced approximately 330 million cents in 1955, and the dies used for this production were subject to the same fatigue processes that generate cuds on every other date: repeated high-pressure strikes progressively weaken the thin rim wall until a crack propagates and a fragment separates. The resulting cavity fills with bronze during each subsequent strike, producing the characteristic raised featureless area. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1955-03R by Cuds on Coins, this variety occupies a modest position in the 1955-P cud catalog. With only three years remaining before the Wheat Cent design would end in 1958, cud varieties from 1955 through 1958 represent the final generation of die breaks on Victor David Brenner's iconic wheat-stalk reverse, a design that had been in production since 1909 and would ultimately yield to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial motif beginning in 1959.
