Die chips visible on both obverse and reverse (marked by "black arrows" in reference images) characterize this second documented interior die break for the 1955 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent — a year already famous for the dramatic 1955 DDO that is one of the most recognizable error coins in American numismatics. Unlike rim cuds that form at the die edge, an interior die break occurs when a section of the die away from the rim fractures and separates, leaving a cavity in the die face that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless area surrounded by normal design elements.
