1954-D Variety WMHO-001
Error
Description
Denver`s 1954 quarter production closes out one of the most systematically distributed doubling events in Washington Quarter history. WMHO-001 originated at the master hub — the apex of the die-making hierarchy — and every working die at every mint from 1951 through 1954 inherited its clockwise spread. On the 1954-D, the moderate displacement from a pivot near 3:00 shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, just as it does on every other date and mint in this four-year family. Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1954-D 25-cent WMHO-001 and classified by CONECA as SD-4-O-V, this Denver issue represents one of the final coins to carry the doubling before a new master hub replaced the affected one. The D-mintmark below the wreath confirms Denver production. Because 1954 was the master hub`s last year, cumulative wear from four years of creating working hubs may have softened the doubling transfer compared to 1951 specimens, though strike quality and die condition remain the dominant variables. Denver`s substantial 1954 production means examples are reasonably accessible, making this an attainable final-year representative of the WMHO-001 master hub doubling event.

- Discovered by John A. Wexler Cross References: CONECA: SD-4-O-V Comments: Because the master hub is designed to be used over a period of several years, this one was used during the period from 1951 through 1954. Consequently most Washington quarters during that period of time will show this doubling. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will be due to wear on the working hubs, wear on the working dies, and wear on the coins themselves.
