Description
This 1950-S Washington quarter exhibits the S/D overmintmark variety, where a San Francisco "S" mint mark was punched over a previously applied Denver "D" mint mark on the reverse die. In the mid-20th century, mint marks were individually hand-punched into working dies at the Philadelphia Mint before the dies were shipped to branch mints. Occasionally, a die that had already received one mint mark was corrected by punching a different letter over it. On this variety, close examination reveals traces of the underlying "D" beneath the "S" mint mark, particularly visible as straight vertical elements within the curved "S." The 1950-S/D is a recognized overmintmark variety and a popular collectible among Washington quarter specialists. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3mm diameter, reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Mintage included within the total 1950-S production of 10,284,004 pieces. The S/D overmintmark variety is scarcer than the D/S counterpart and commands a premium in all grades.
