Description
This 1950-D Washington quarter displays the D/S overmintmark variety, where a Denver "D" mint mark was punched over a previously applied San Francisco "S" mint mark on the reverse die. During this era, mint marks were hand-punched into individual working dies, and dies were sometimes transferred between mint facilities. When a die originally prepared with an "S" mint mark was sent to Denver, the Denver Mint would punch a "D" over the existing "S." Under magnification, remnants of the underlying "S" are visible within or around the "D" mint mark, most notably in the curves that extend beyond the straight vertical strokes of the "D." The 1950-D/S is one of only a handful of overmintmark varieties in the Washington quarter series and is avidly collected by variety specialists. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3mm diameter, reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Mintage included within the total 1950-D production of 21,075,600 pieces. The D/S overmintmark variety is scarce, with a population significantly smaller than the standard 1950-D. Particularly challenging in gem grades.
