1950 Variety WWHO-001
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1950 Lincoln Wheat Cent WWHO-001 represents a fundamentally different class of doubling than standard doubled die varieties. The designation WWHO — Working die from a Working Hub with an Obverse doubling — indicates the doubling occurred at the master hub level rather than on an individual working die. Every working die produced from the affected hub inherits the same doubling, so this variety can appear on coins from any working die made from that hub. The Wexler cross-reference spans all three mints — "1950 (P, D, S) 1¢ WWHO-001" — confirming Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco each received dies carrying this hub error. A close spread towards the center shows on the E in WE of IN GOD WE TRUST. Die markers vary among working dies since the doubling is constant but die-specific characteristics differ per die. This Philadelphia Mint issue — the origin facility where master hubs were created — was struck in Victor David Brenner's bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc at 3.11 grams.
