1946-S Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-001

Description

Fundamentally different from a standard doubled die reverse, the 1946-S WWHR-001 documents hub-level doubling on the Lincoln Wheat Cent — a Wexler Working Hub Reverse variety where the doubling originated during creation of the working hub itself, not during subsequent production of individual working dies. The spread appears towards the center on the lower half of the left wheat ear and the left wheat stem. Because the doubling exists on the hub, every working die produced from it inherits the same doubled impression, potentially affecting an entire production run rather than just coins from a single die. This distinguishes WWHR varieties from DDR varieties, which affect only the specific die that received a misaligned hub impression. No known cross-references exist, making the Wexler designation the sole published attribution, and die markers will vary across working dies since multiple dies were made from the affected hub. The 1946-S was the first post-war San Francisco cent, returning to standard 95% copper after two years of shell casing planchets. Struck at 19mm. Examine the lower half of the left wheat ear and stem for the centripetal spread.
