1945 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

A combination variety on a 1945 Mercury Dime, this coin pairs a doubled die reverse (Wexler 1945 10c WDDR-001) with a doubled die obverse listed separately as 1945 10c WDDO-001. The obverse doubling shows Class II spread toward center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and Adolph Weinman's designer's initials. Obverse die markers include two parallel die gouges running north from the rim below the E of WE, a die gouge oriented ENE-WSW between the upper right of Y in LIBERTY and the rim, and a die scratch running NNE from the right upper side of the 4 in the date. On the reverse, a short NNE-SSW die gouge appears between the A and T of STATES. Collectors should note both the DDR and DDO attributions, as combination varieties carrying doubling on both sides from a single die pair are significantly scarcer than single-side doubled dies. The 1945 Mercury Dime was the final year of Weinman's beloved Winged Liberty Head design, struck in 90% silver before being replaced by the Roosevelt Dime in 1946. Both attributions should be referenced when identifying this variety.
