1945 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1945 10-cent WDDO-001, this Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime is a dual doubled die — both the obverse and reverse carry hub doubling from different classes. The obverse exhibits Class II spread toward center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the designer's initials. Obverse die markers include two parallel die gouges running north from the rim below the E of WE, a gouge between the upper right Y of LIBERTY and the rim, and a die scratch running north-northeast from the right upper 4 in the date. The reverse is also a doubled die, separately attributed as WDDR-001, displaying Class I counterclockwise spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, both stars, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DIME, and the lower olive branch. The strongest reverse spread appears on the lower portion, indicating the rotation point lies between center and rim. A short die gouge between the A and T of STATES provides a reverse die marker. Dual doubled dies — where both obverse and reverse carry independent doubled die attributions — are uncommon and particularly desirable to Mercury Dime variety specialists.
