1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Recognized with the FS-101 Fivaz-Stanton designation and cross-referenced as 2-O-V-CCW from K-12 in the CONECA system, DDO-002 on the 1945 Philadelphia Mercury Dime is one of the most thoroughly documented doubled die obverse varieties for this final-year issue. The CONECA notation identifies variety 2, obverse, Class V pivoted hub doubling with counterclockwise rotation from K-12 (12 o'clock) — the hub pivoted CCW from the die's top, directing spread downward. Medium spread manifests on the date in the lower portion of Adolph Weinman's obverse, where the pivot delivers maximum displacement. Die markers UVC-240 and DMR-004 confirm the working die, placing it early in the 1945 obverse population. The FS-101 listing ensures grading service recognition and collector demand. The 1945 Mercury Dime was the last year of the Winged Liberty Head series (1916-1945), struck in 90% silver at 2.5 grams before the Roosevelt Dime replaced it. As a terminal-year variety with both CONECA and Fivaz-Stanton recognition, DDO-002 occupies a prominent position in Mercury Dime variety collecting. Medium date spread is confirmed under 5x to 7x magnification.
