Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1945-D 10¢ WDDO-002 and submitted by discoverer Thomas McGowan, this variety exhibits doubled die obverse characteristics consistent with a Mercury Dime despite its current catalog placement. The spread to the north is visible on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the tips of the wing feathers between R and T in LIBERTY, BER in LIBERTY, and the top of Liberty's winged cap. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running west from the top of the T in LIBERTY and a die scratch running southwest to northeast to the left of Liberty's nose. The reverse carries a small die gouge below the O in OF. The cross-reference designation of 1945-D 10¢ WDDO-002 confirms this is a Mercury Dime variety, featuring design elements specific to Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design including the distinctive winged Phrygian cap and wing feather details.
