1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Extreme extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST places this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent at the top tier of obverse doubled dies for the issue, cataloged as DDO-001 and cross-referenced in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-101. VarietyVista die markers are UVC-1619 and DMR-022. The D mintmark on this die sits higher than on the related DDO-007, separating the two when examining raw examples. Four die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B is mid-die state (unconfirmed). Stage C is late die state, with a light die crack extending northeast from behind the ear; the reverse also enters late die state. Stage D is very late die state, the crack strengthening to the top of the head below WE of WE TRUST, with the reverse at very late die state as well. The FS-101 cross-reference signals mainstream cherry-picking literature recognition. Extreme doubling, four documented stages, a Cherrypickers' designation, and a mintmark-position differentiator make DDO-001 the flagship obverse variety for the 1944-D Lincoln cent.
