Description

Working hub doubling on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar produced one of the most broadly distributed obverse varieties in the series. WHO-005 originated on a doubled working hub, meaning multiple working dies inherited the same strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the lower gown, three center sun rays, the curl in the flag, stars, nose, and leaves. Because the doubling sits at the working hub level, coins from all three 1943 mints can exhibit this variety. Philadelphia carries die markers UVC-108 and DMR-006; Denver carries UVC-160 and DMR-006; San Francisco is documented as MMS-005 with a large mintmark. The individual working dies from this hub are not separately cataloged, as each carries the same fundamental displacement. The strong spread indicates the doubling is clearly visible under standard magnification, spanning both lettering and figural design — from the motto through Liberty`s gown to the sunburst rays. Adolph A. Weinman`s Walking Liberty design, with its intricate drapery and solar rays, provides rich zones where hub-level displacement creates compelling secondary impressions across the obverse composition.
