1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Tenth documented doubled die reverse for the 1942 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent — the final year of standard copper alloy before wartime steel — this variety exhibits light spread to the south on CEN of CENT, a notably localized doubling pattern affecting just three letters. Cataloged under VarietyVista identifiers UVC-2577 and DMR-021, the southward directionality tells researchers the hub shifted downward between impressions during die manufacture, displacing only the portion of the inscription where the shift was geometrically detectable. The focused spread, limited to part of CENT rather than spanning multiple inscription areas, suggests a very slight displacement visible only in the zone of maximum apparent shift. Die stage documentation at Stage B mid-die state includes a specific diagnostic: die scratches under GOD, providing an attribution marker connecting a coin to this particular die. Stages A and C in early and late die state await confirmation. Ten DDR varieties for 1942 reflects systematic examination of a year whose production would be the last in traditional composition before wartime needs dictated a historic material change.
