1941 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDO-008 is the second proof doubled die obverse for the 1941 Lincoln Wheat Cent from the Philadelphia Mint, sharing the limited proof mintage of 15,287 sets with companion DDO-006. The doubling presents as a medium spread appearing as one half extra bar on the right top edge of the horizontal bar of the last T in TRUST. Die stages are tracked under UVC-1480 and DMR-010, distinguishing this from DDO-006 which carries UVC-1478. Stage A represents early die state, while Stage B is identified by a die crack on the shoulder above V.D.B., designer Victor David Brenner's initials, with the reverse at mid-die state. Stage C shows late die state. Like DDO-006, this variety exhibits the Full T over Broken T Hub transition, confirming multiple proof dies were prepared from hubs spanning the design changeover. The die crack above Brenner's initials in Stage B links the die's deterioration to the designer's signature. Two proof doubled dies from the same date with the same hub transition underscore the complexity of the Mint's tooling changes during 1941 production.
