About This Coin
The 1940 Philippine Centavo is a United States cent from the Philippines Centavos 1903-1945 series — a late issue, 34th of 36 years in the series. In 1940, coins were struck at the M Mint. The obverse features a male figure seated beside a hammer and anvil and the reverse displays an eagle above a shield, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck during the Great Depression, when mintages dropped sharply and the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933. Struck in bronze. Designed by Melecio Figueroa.
