The 1937 Texas Independence Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Authorized in 1934 to celebrate the centennial of Texas independence from Mexico in 1836. The coin honors Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, the 'Father of Texas,' and features the Alamo — site of the famous 1836 battle. The series was produced from 1934 through 1938 at multiple mints. The obverse features an eagle perched on a large five-pointed star with a small winged figure of Victory at the top, surrounded by portraits of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, while the reverse displays the Alamo mission in San Antonio, with the winged figure of Liberty kneeling before it. Designed by Pompeo Coppini. Lower mintages across all three mints make the 1937 PDS set one of the more sought-after years. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Texas Centennial Half Dollar is one of the most popular multi-year commemorative programs, with PDS mint sets from each year creating a challenging complete collection.
