About This Coin

The 1900 Lafayette Commemorative Dollar is a United States dollar from the Classic Silver Commemoratives (1892-1954) series. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, each authorized by an individual act of Congress, while the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Designed by Charles E. Barber. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Classic Silver Commemoratives (1892-1954) were half dollars and occasional other denominations struck to honor people, places, and events in American history. Beginning with the 1892 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar, over 50 different types were produced. The program was eventually ended after criticism of over-commercialization and excessive varieties. A rich and diverse series that spans over 60 years of American history. Many issues had very low mintages and are highly sought after. The complete set is a significant numismatic achievement.
