1937 Variety WWHO-001
Error
Description
Distinguished from ordinary doubled die obverses by its origin at the hub level rather than the die level, the 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent WWHO-001 (Wexler Working Hub Obverse) documents a Class II spread directed toward the center, visible on the digits 937 in the date and on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Hub-level doubling is mechanically significant because a doubled working hub transmits its doubling to every working die produced from it — unlike a standard DDO, which affects only a single die. This means WWHO-001 is the parent variety for most 1937 CONECA-listed doubled die obverses, each of which represents a separate working die made from the same doubled hub. Because the doubling originates on the hub, die-specific markers such as die cracks and polishing lines will vary from specimen to specimen depending on which working die struck the coin, but the Class II centripetal spread on 937 and IGWT remains constant. The 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at Philadelphia in 95% copper on a 19mm planchet. Brenner's portrait and wheat ear reverse were in their twenty-eighth year of production. Examine the date and motto for the characteristic inward-converging spread.
