1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Recognized across multiple attribution systems as CONECA 2-O-V, FS-01-1936-102, Breen #2135, Crawford CDDO-002, and Coppercoins 1936P-1DO-002, the 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-002 displays a very strong Class V counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately the 10:00 position. The doubling registers prominently on LIBERTY, the lower bust, the date, Lincoln's eyelid, TRUST, and the bowtie. Obverse Stage A features a strong die gouge running east-southeast from the rim through TRU of TRUST and a die scratch trending southwest from the lower left of I in LIBERTY. Notably, the first hubbing was made from a hub with a broken left leg on the R in LIBERTY. By Stage B, the die gouge at TRUST has weakened considerably and the scratch from I has been abraded away through die maintenance. The reverse progresses from Stage A with no noted markers to Stage B, where die scratches appear northeast inside the bottom curve of C in CENT and a die scratch runs south from the bottom center of that same letter. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this Depression-era variety stands among the strongest Lincoln Cent doubled dies of the 1930s.
