1936-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Strong spread on the date, all lower details of Miss Liberty, the lower rays, and parts of the ground details makes this first-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1936-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar one of the more visually striking varieties in the series. Adolph Weinman's striding Liberty figure, with its flowing robes, outstretched arm, and sunrise rays, provides abundant fine detail where hub doubling becomes readily apparent — the lower drapery folds and ground line elements are especially diagnostic areas. Die markers include UVC-042 and DMR-002, with three stages all unconfirmed: Stage A (EDS), Stage B (MDS), and Stage C (LDS). VarietyVista notes that multiple working dies were created using this doubled working hub, and the individual working dies are not separately listed — meaning any Walking Liberty Half Dollar struck in 1936 at Denver with this doubling pattern traces back to the same defective hub regardless of which specific working die produced the coin. The 1936-D half had a mintage of approximately 2.36 million, a modest figure that makes all varieties from this date-mintmark relatively scarce in absolute terms.
