Description
Travis Dobbins's 2017 discovery of VAM-1J for the 1935 Peace Dollar identified two distinct obverse features: a short vertical die gouge positioned well below the V in TRVST, and a beveled field area beneath the TRVST inscription. The beveled field represents a subtle alteration where the flat field slopes at a slight angle rather than remaining perfectly level, possibly from uneven die polishing or maintenance. The die gouge below V provides a pinpoint diagnostic, while the broader beveled field offers secondary confirmation visible under raking light. Cataloged as plate 1J II1 - B2a with I-2 importance and R-5 rarity estimating 1 to 5 known specimens, this variety is genuinely scarce. The 1935 Peace Dollar is the final year of original series production before the cancelled 1964 authorization. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this last-year Peace Dollar combines die gouge and beveled field features into a dual-diagnostic variety for Peace Dollar specialists.
