1935-P VAM-1H

Description

Originally discovered by Thomas Petrosie in 2014, this 1935-P Peace Dollar was cataloged as VAM-1H with die pair II1, reverse B2a, and a rarity rating of I-2 R-5. The variety was characterized by die scratches on the reverse near R and ST: a long vertical die scratch to the right of R in DOLLAR near the rim, die scratches above ST in STATES, and short die scratches at MER in AMERICA and between S and OF. However, VAM-1H was eliminated in 2019 when further research determined it to be an early die state of VAM-1B1 rather than a distinct die variety. Elimination differs from delisting in that the features were confirmed to exist but were reclassified as belonging to another already-cataloged variety rather than dismissed entirely. The R-5 rarity rating indicated only 30 to 75 known examples. The 1935-P Peace Dollar was struck during the final year of the original Peace Dollar series, with a mintage of just over 1.5 million pieces — modest by series standards but sufficient to maintain collector availability. Peace Dollar VAM research continues to refine its catalog through this kind of reclassification, ensuring that each active number represents a genuinely distinct die marriage.
