Error
Description
Discovered in March 2012 by John Roberts on a coin from C. Logan McKechnie, the 1935 Peace Dollar VAM-1F is classified as III 1, B2a reverse (Die File Lines Obverse, Scribbles PEACE), rated I-3 R-5. The obverse shows fine die file lines across the fields, evidence of die surface preparation at the Mint. The reverse carries circumferential die cracks at the outer letters, along with fine die scratches running in various directions at the PEACE inscription, tail feathers, and rays above the mountains. These multidirectional scratches at PEACE were applied to eliminate die cracks, representing deliberate Mint repair work to extend the die's service life. The "Scribbles PEACE" designation colorfully describes this repair evidence. As one of the final Peace Dollar issues before the series ended in 1935, this variety documents late-production die maintenance on a design that had been in service since 1921.
