1935 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1324 and DMR-003, this 1935 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-002 displays light spread on the digits 35 of the date and on TRUST. The light spread produces subtly thickened numerals and letters where a secondary hub impression sits close to the primary, requiring magnification to resolve the displacement fully. Documented across Stages A through C, the variety progresses through die states that track the die's working life from early production to advanced deterioration. In late die state, a die crack develops from the lower right wheat stalk extending to the rim — a progressive structural failure marker that helps collectors determine where a given specimen falls within the die's production sequence. The wheat stalk die crack is particularly useful for attribution because it provides a visible, locatable feature that changes predictably as the die deteriorates. The 1935 Philadelphia cent saw high-volume production during the mid-Depression era, and systematic examination of surviving populations has revealed multiple doubled die varieties from this date.
