Description

Though it is filed with the Century of Progress pieces, the 1933 Ford medal, HK-465, had nothing to do with the exposition, since Ford did not take part until the following year. Hibler and Kappen explain that it was made for the Detroit Auto Show, which opened on October 21, 1933, on the theme "Thirty Years of Progress" and drew more than 1.1 million visitors in its first week. The obverse is the radiator front of a 1933 Ford with the script name across it, between the upright dates 1903 and 1933. The reverse stacks a V-8 emblem on an open wreath between "Thirty Years" and "of Progress." It was restruck in 1973; the later pieces show prooflike surfaces and a tiny 1973 after the word Progress.
