1930 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty quarter reached its final year of production in 1930, and DDO-001 preserves a doubled die from the closing chapter of one of America's most celebrated coin designs. Light spread appears on IN GOD, the LIB portion of LIBERTY, and very light spread on the olive branch — the branch being a reverse element whose presence in the obverse doubling description reflects the design's intricate overlapping relief. Philadelphia struck 5.63 million quarters in 1930 before the series gave way to John Flanagan's Washington quarter in 1932, making any die variety from this terminal date scarce by the standards of later coinage. Andrew Prechtl reported this variety, contributing to the die variety census for a series that receives less systematic attention than longer-running designs like the Washington quarter or Lincoln cent. As DDO-001, this holds the primary catalog position among Standing Liberty quarter obverse doubled dies for 1930. The light-class doubling on IN GOD and LIB demands precise magnification technique, while the very light olive branch spread may require higher-power examination to confirm. Collectors of the Standing Liberty series should note that this variety comes from the Type 2 design, which featured recessed date numerals and chainmail-armored Liberty.
