1929 Typical Die Clash TDC-25C-1929-01

Description

Documented by MadDieClashes as TDC-25c-1929-01, this 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter from the Philadelphia Mint displays a typical die clash — a variety produced when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without an intervening planchet, transferring incuse impressions of one die's design elements onto the other's surface. This specimen shows only an obverse die clash, with two distinct groups of transferred reverse design elements: the clash marks left by the eagle's tail feathers appear near the fabric fold to the left of Liberty's right elbow, while the E from E PLURIBUS UNUM and the M from AMERICA appear clashed into the back of Liberty's robe below her right knee. The Standing Liberty Quarter was designed by Hermon A. MacNeil and produced from 1916 to 1930. The 1929 issue was struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm, representing the penultimate year of the series before it was replaced by the Washington Quarter in 1932. MacNeil's design features a standing Liberty holding a shield and olive branch on the obverse and a heraldic eagle in flight on the reverse, with the obverse's flowing robes and detailed fabric folds providing numerous surfaces where clash marks can register. The tail feather clash near the elbow and the EPU/M clash below the knee appear at different heights on the obverse, corresponding to the vertical positions of those reverse elements when the dies meet face-to-face. Typical die clashes are distinguished from atypical clashes by their standard positioning — the transferred images appear where geometric alignment between the dies would predict them.
