1928-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II, WDDO-001 on the 1928-D Mercury Dime presents a Class II spread toward the center visible on the date. This variety was submitted by Thomas McGowan. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge above the U in TRUST in one die state, along with a strong die gouge to the left of the lower chin visible in another die state. No significant reverse die markers have been noted. An additional CONECA cross-reference of 2-O-II acknowledges a secondary listing within the CONECA attribution system. The Class II center-directed spread on the date indicates a Distorted Hub Doubling mechanism, where the secondary hub impression compressed or shifted the date numerals inward toward the die center, creating doubling that manifests as extra thickness or shadow images on the digits 1, 9, 2, and 8. The 1928-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper composition, weighing 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. Adolph A. Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, running from 1916 to 1945, placed the date at the lower right of the obverse below Liberty's neck truncation, making date-focused doubling particularly prominent and accessible for cherrypicking. The 1928-D is a relatively common date in the Mercury Dime series, which means WDDO-001 specimens can potentially be found by carefully examining examples from circulation finds, dealer inventories, and estate accumulations under 10x magnification focused on the date digits.
