Description

With only 4.16 million pieces struck, the 1928-D Mercury Dime is a lower-mintage issue where any die variety carries added significance due to the restricted surviving population. DDO-001, the primary doubled die obverse, shows light spread on the date and on Adolph Weinman's designer initials AW, which appear on the obverse near Liberty's shoulder. Cross-referenced as 1-O-II-C in the CONECA classification system, the II-C designation identifies this as Class II pivoted hub doubling — a rotational misalignment where the hub pivoted relative to the die around a fixed point during the hubbing process. Die markers UVC-272 and DMR-002 provide the secondary identification points for this specific die. As the primary DDO for the 1928-D date, this variety establishes the benchmark for doubled die obverse research on one of the lower-mintage Denver Mercury Dimes from the 1920s. The Class II-C pivot mechanism produces doubling that increases with distance from the pivot point, and on a Mercury Dime the date and designer initials — both located in the lower obverse field — may reflect similar or differing amounts of spread depending on their distance from the rotational center. Denver's relatively modest output in 1928 means fewer die pairs were needed, making each documented die variety a proportionally larger fraction of the total production.
