1926 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
This 1926 Buffalo Nickel is the primary doubled die reverse for the issue, cataloged as DDR-001 with die marriage DMR-003. The doubling presents a light spread directed South on E PLURIBUS UNUM, visible under magnification as a subtle secondary image displaced downward from the primary lettering. Die markers include UVC-106, and Stage A shows the reverse in Early Die State with a light die crack developing on the forehead by Mid-Die State. Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. Attributed by VarietyVista. James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel reverse, featuring an American Bison standing on a mound, provides several areas where hub doubling can manifest, with the E PLURIBUS UNUM motto positioned above the buffalo being particularly susceptible due to its fine incuse lettering. As DDR-001, this variety holds the distinction of being the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1926 Philadelphia Mint issue, making it the benchmark variety against which other potential DDR finds for this date are compared.
